Five-piece Irish indie rock band Cardinals play the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, presented by Futuresound.
Cardinals play Brudenell Social Club on Monday 16 November, presented by Futuresound. They're a five-piece independent rock band from Kinsale, Cork, built around family and old school ties: brothers Euan Manning on vocals and guitar, and Finn Manning on accordion; their cousin Darragh on drums, tambourine and glockenspiel; and former schoolmates Oskar Gudinovic on guitar and Aaron Hurley on bass.
They're touring their debut album, Masquerade, which they've structured with an A-side and a B-side as a nod to vinyl. The influences they list run a fair distance apart — Townes Van Zandt and Nine Inch Nails, Iceage and Type O Negative — and the record reflects that, sitting somewhere between folk-leaning songwriting and a heavier, industrial edge. It was recorded at RAK Studios in London with producer Shrink, and they cut it without a click track to keep a 'beautifully imperfect' sound. The cover art comes from the painting Fristeren by Norwegian-Irish artist Oda Sønderland.
There's a strong streak of religious imagery in the lyrics, and they draw on real-world events, from the writing of Kevin Barry to the 1920 British forces' decimation of Cork. It's the kind of record that asks you to listen to the words as much as the music, and the live show should give those songs some room to breathe.
