Over-18s night of live music by Calvin Love, presented by Real Sounds, at The Attic in Leeds.
Calvin Love plays The Attic on Monday 9 November, with the night presented by Real Sounds. It's a solo bill, so it's just him on the lineup.
Love is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Edmonton, Alberta, and his records pull from a few different places at once. He folds new wave, psych-pop and rock and roll into a shadowy, romantic sound, and his songs move between night-drive synths, guitar-led hooks and atmospheric storytelling. There's a strong thread of nostalgia and noir running through it all, and he describes his work as fusing psych-folk, cinematic longing and romanticism to build a world that's both vintage and strangely modern. His most recent work is Throw My Shadow To The Sun.
As a writer and performer, he's hard to pin down to one particular mood. The synths suggest late-night drives, the guitar hooks keep things grounded in rock and roll, and the storytelling gives the songs their atmosphere. It's that mix of psych-folk and cinematic longing that puts him in a particular pocket — somewhere between a pop song and a soundtrack, and always with a romantic, slightly dark edge. If you're into music that leans into the noir side of things, this is exactly where he sits.
