Community gardening event with free bulbs to take home, a plant and produce swap, and advice from florist Jenny.
Bramley Baths in Bloom is on at Bramley Baths this Saturday 17 October, from 10:00 to 12:00. It's a community gardening morning, and the main draw is the free bulbs you can take home to plant in your own garden or window box. There's also a plant and produce swap, so bring along any cuttings, seeds, or veg you've got too many of and trade them for something new. If you're not sure where to start, florist Jenny will be there giving advice on the day.
The Baths themselves are a community-led, not-for-profit centre for fitness, health and fun, housing a public gym, swimming pool, steam room and space for community events, meetings and fitness classes. It stands on the site of a foundry and first opened as a pool and public bath-house in 1904, when local residents could wash, swim and take the Russian Steam Baths that were fashionable with the Edwardians as a healthy pastime. The foundry chimney, built with 8,000 Kirkstall bricks, still towers over the baths and can be seen from across Leeds.
The building is Grade II listed, with stained-glass windows, architecture and a social history reaching back to the twentieth century, and archives that preserve the memory of a donkey that appeared on stage one evening. This session forms part of #morethanapool, a heritage participation project led by local historian and University of Leeds PhD researcher Sophia Lambert, founder of @LeedsHiddenHeritage, which uses talks, tours, workshops and memory-sharing to uncover how people have experienced the Baths.
