Immersive ballet of Sleeping Beauty with dancers in glow-in-the-dark costumes that respond to their movements, blending classical dance with modern visual technology.
Ballet of Lights: Sleeping Beauty in a Sparkling Show comes to the Riley Smith Theatre on Sunday 20 December, with two performances that afternoon: one at 16:00 and another at 18:00. It's a reimagining of Sleeping Beauty as an immersive ballet, and the hook is the costumes โ the dancers wear glow-in-the-dark outfits that respond to every movement, turning the stage into a canvas of light. The story follows the princess from her enchanted sleep to her true love's kiss, and the whole thing blends classical dance with modern visual technology. The music is a soundtrack of works by some of the greatest classical composers, and the show runs for about sixty minutes with no interval.
Behind the production are Marรญa Farelo and Cristian Pรฉrez of Luma Artistas S.L., who created it with six local dancers. The venue is the Riley Smith Theatre, inside Leeds University Union on Lifton Place in Woodhouse (LS2 9JZ), a historic 360-seat proscenium theatre that's been recently refurbished. It's recommended for ages five and over, and children under sixteen need to be accompanied by an adult. Seating is first come, first served, so if you've got a particular spot in mind, it's worth getting there a bit early.
