A guided seasonal walk around the historic Temple Newsam Estate, exploring nature, history and wildlife.
Autumn Amble is a guided walk across the Temple Newsam Estate on Wednesday 21 October, running from 10:30 to 12:30. It's a seasonal stroll through the grounds, with a guide leading the way across the estate's nature, history and wildlife.
Temple Newsam is one of those places that works on two levels. There's the house, a country home whose grounds date back to 1086, and then there's the estate itself, which functions as a living landscape. The house opens up more than 40 rooms of decorative arts, with furniture, silver, ceramics and wallpaper by names like Thomas Chippendale, Paul de Lamerie, George Stubbs, Joshua Reynolds and William Morris. It's a lot of history under one roof, and the walk lets you see the grounds that surround it.
Out on the estate, the focus shifts to the land. There's a working farm with rare-breed animals, gardens including a Rhododendron walk, and lakes that turn gold and copper as the season settles in. The guided walk takes you through that landscape, so you'll be seeing the estate as a working place as much as a scenic one. It's a good way to get a sense of the scale of the place, from the house and its interiors out to the farm and the changing colours of the autumn foliage.
