The Who's rock opera Tommy returns in a dazzling all-new production at Midwest Trust Center, with a pre-show lecture at 6:30 p.m.
The Who's Tommy comes to Yardley Hall at the Midwest Trust Center on Wednesday, October 14, as part of a new production of the rock opera. The show runs 100 minutes without an intermission, and there's a pre-show lecture at 6:30 PM before the curtain goes up at 7:30 PM.
If you're not familiar with the story, it's a long one. Back in 1969, The Who put together a rock opera that changed the course of music history, and its anthems — "I'm Free," "See Me, Feel Me," "Sensation," and "Pinball Wizard" — defined a generation. The story follows young Tommy Walker, who, after witnessing his father shoot his rival, is lost in the universe and obsessively stares into a mirror until an innate knack for pinball catapults him from reticent adolescent to celebrity savior. Tony Award-winning composer Pete Townshend and Tony Award-winning original director Des McAnuff have reexamined the classic for today in this all-new production.
It's a production that doesn't shy away from the heavier parts of the original story, which includes depictions of bullying, substance abuse, and scenes of war. The staging is just as intense: loud music, multiple gunshots, theatrical haze, and strobe and flashing light effects. Because of that, the show is recommended for ages 16 and up.
