A creative writing workshop where participants read and analyse scary short stories, followed by a short in-class writing segment, as part of the Free Write Series.
Spooky Short Stories lands at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Saturday, October 31, at 12 PM. It's part of the library's Writers for Readers series, and the timing is a bit on the nose—Halloween afternoon. The session is built around reading and analyzing scary short stories, with a short in-class writing segment to follow. You'll spend the first part of the hour working through a few pieces, and then you'll get a chance to put what you've discussed into your own writing.
The series is taught by a graduate student in the University of Missouri-Kansas City's MFA Program in Creative Writing, so it's led by someone still deep in the craft. It's one of several workshops the library runs under the Writers for Readers umbrella, which also includes Creative Nonfiction, Monsters as Metaphor, Journaling Journey, and Writing Flash Fiction. If you've already dropped in on one of those, this one fits right in with the rest.
Beyond the workshops, the library also puts on an An Evening with literary series, which has brought in authors like Gillian Flynn. Between that and the Writers for Readers sessions, there's a fair amount of writing and reading happening across the system.
