A community event where volunteers help repair items like bikes, clothing, and electronics, alongside a free clothing swap.
The Repair Cafe comes to the Lucile H. Bluford Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Saturday, October 17, from 10 AM to 2 PM. It's a free event run in partnership with Re.Use.Full, an organization that advocates for repairing things rather than tossing them. The premise is simple: you bring in something that's broken, and you're paired with a volunteer who helps you fix it. It's not just about the repair itself, but about learning how to do it, so the next time something breaks, you might be able to handle it on your own.
The range of what can be mended is pretty broad. Volunteers will be on hand for bikes, clothing, computers, electronics, jewelry, lamps, and small appliances. Whether it's a loose thread on a favorite sweater, a lamp that won't light, or a bike that's seen better days, it's worth bringing along. The session also includes a free clothing swap—bring in clean, gently used clothes you no longer wear and trade them for something else to refresh your wardrobe without buying anything new.
There's a bit of a larger story behind it. The Repair Cafe is part of an international movement that started as a response to the way we've come to treat our things: we often throw them away because it's cheaper to replace them than to fix them, or because we just don't know how. By pairing volunteers with attendees, the cafe keeps broken items out of the landfill and puts the skill of repairing back into the hands of the people who use them.

The venue itself is the Lucile H. Bluford Branch on Kansas City's east side, named for one of the city's most accomplished figures. Bluford used her journalistic talents at The Kansas City Call to champion civil rights and strengthen the African American community, and the branch stands as a tribute to her work. The Repair Cafe runs from 10 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, October 17, and it's free to attend.
