Saxophonist Nick May performs as soloist with the Pinnacle Winds, conducted by Dr. John Carmichael.
Nick May performs at the First Church of Nazarene on Sunday, October 11, at 2 PM. He's appearing as soloist with the Pinnacle Winds, with Dr. John Carmichael leading the ensemble. The center of the program is Tyler Harrison's Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Wind Ensemble, so you'll hear May on the soprano saxophone rather than the tenor or alto most people associate with the instrument.
May has a background that stretches well beyond a single city or style. He made his solo debut at eighteen with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra and has played across the United States and abroad, including several solo appearances at Carnegie Hall. Pulitzer Prize and Grammy winner David Del Tredici described him as "a highly expressive, virtuosic, and fresh performer," and he's recorded for Neuma and Albany Records. He plays on Yanagisawa saxophones.
He also works in chamber music. He's a founding member of Latitude 39, a trio with violinist Diana Seitz and pianist Maya Tuylieva that blends Turkmen, Ukrainian, and Azerbaijani traditions with contemporary repertoire. Beyond the stage, he founded the I Exist Project, an initiative celebrating queer life, culture, and creativity.
