Weekly big band jam session and creative laboratory by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra where audience musicians are invited to join in.
New Jazz Order kicks off at Westport Flea Market/Bowery on Tuesday, October 20, and it's a weekly thing through December 29. The night is run by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, and it's part of their KCJO JazzWorks! education initiative. They describe it as part rehearsal, part workshop and part community gathering—a big band jam session that's as much about the process as the performance.
What makes it different from a standard gig is that you're watching the music happen in real time. You'll see musicians reading charts, improvising, mentoring younger players and collaborating on the fly, with no polishing or perfection. The band plays a few opening tunes and then opens the floor: audience musicians are invited to come forward and sit in. It's open to players of all levels, so you don't have to be a pro to get involved.
It's framed as one of the city's best opportunities to see jazz not simply performed but created, set against a living Kansas City jazz tradition that still echoes across the city every night of the week. If you've ever wondered how a big band actually works from the inside, this is a good place to watch it unfold.
