Cowpunk artist Max Diaz performs with Mariachi El Bronx at Warehouse On Broadway.
Max Diaz plays Warehouse On Broadway on Tuesday, October 13, appearing with Mariachi El Bronx. It's a cowpunk show, and the lineup puts Diaz front and center for the night.
If you aren't familiar with the term, cowpunk is exactly what it sounds like: country music pushed through a punk filter. Diaz is a Chicano cowpunk artist from Texas City, Texas, and he describes his sound as a blend of western grit with alternative rock, hardcore and metal. That's a wide spread to cover in one set—the twang of the west meeting the heavier edges of rock and metal—and it's the kind of thing that usually works better live than on a recording, where you can actually feel the crossover.
He's joining Mariachi El Bronx this fall, and this is the date that brings that cowpunk sound to Kansas City. It's a Texas artist coming up to Missouri, so the whole thing has a bit of a touring feel to it. If you've been following the scene, you know that the Chicano influence is a big part of the sound here, and having a Texas City native lead the charge fits right in with the roots of the genre.
