Jazz jam session featuring Marcus Lewis and his band at Vine Street Brewing Co.
Marcus Lewis is playing Vine Street Brewing Co. on Wednesday, October 14, from 7 PM to 10 PM. It's a jazz jam session with a live band, and there's no cover charge, so you can just walk in.
If you're not familiar with him, Lewis is a Kansas City trombonist who's built a career around both leading his own groups and playing with some of the biggest names in music. He runs his own quintet and an 18-piece big band, and his project Brass and Boujee hit number two on the iTunes Jazz Charts and number fifteen on the Billboard contemporary jazz charts. He's also the founder and artistic director of Future Jazz, a nonprofit dedicated to jazz education, and he teaches as an adjunct jazz trombone professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance.
His resume goes well beyond the local scene. He's performed at the Kennedy Center, the Sydney Opera House, and the White House for President Barack Obama, and has appeared on Saturday Night Live, The Late Show with David Letterman, and American Idol. He was awarded the 2008 Betty Carter Jazz Residency and the 2003 Outstanding Soloist award at the Wichita Jazz Festival, and has played alongside Aretha Franklin, Prince, Janelle MonΓ‘e, and Quincy Jones.
