Free outdoor chamber music concert by the Kansas City Symphony's Mobile Music Box at Kirkwood Green Space.
The Kansas City Symphony is bringing its Mobile Music Box to Kirkwood Green Space on Sunday, October 11. It's a free outdoor chamber music concert, part of a larger fall season that's taking the symphony out of the concert hall and into local parks across the metro.
If you haven't come across the Mobile Music Box before, it's a smaller-scale version of the full orchestra—chamber music rather than a full symphonic program—which makes it a lot easier to move around the city. The whole project started during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to keep bringing live music to people when indoor venues were closed. Since then, symphony musicians have played in 263 different locations across 96 zip codes, reaching nearly 80,000 people. The Kirkwood date is one of 14 concerts scheduled for the fall season, which runs from September 10 through October 27, with all of them weather permitting.
Behind the scenes, the Kansas City Symphony is currently in its 45th season, led by music director Matthias Pintscher, an internationally acclaimed conductor and composer. The Mobile Music Box is essentially the symphony's way of taking that professional caliber and putting it in the middle of a neighborhood park rather than keeping it behind a ticketed door. It's a good chance to hear them in a more casual setting.

Admission is free, and since it's outdoors, it's a low-pressure way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Just keep in mind that the whole season is weather permitting, so it's worth checking the forecast before you head out to Kirkwood Green Space on October 11.
