Casual chess play for all skill levels on the West Truss of the Rock Island Bridge, with community members helping newcomers.
Kansas City Chess Park brings casual play to the Rock Island Bridge on Sunday, October 18, from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM. It's open play for every level—regulars and first-timers alike—and community members will be on hand to walk newcomers through the game, so you don't need to know a thing about chess to show up and play.
The games happen on the West Truss of the bridge, suspended over the Kansas River with the city skyline in view. The bridge itself is a 120-year-old railroad span that the city is reimagining as a riverfront landmark for dining, events, and public gatherings, billed as America's first entertainment district on a bridge. It's open to the public free of charge from sunrise to sunset between March and December, with a fully covered central truss, leashed pets welcome, and public Wi-Fi.

If you're planning to hang out for a few hours, you can eat there too. The Rock Island Eats lunch menu runs from 11 AM to 3 PM, and the River House dinner menu takes over from 3 PM, with a walk-up window for when you just want something quick. The chess session runs from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM, so you can grab lunch and a game in one go. Entry is free.
