The Musicology Band performs live at The Blue Room in Kansas City, covering funk, R&B, Motown, pop, rock and blues from the 1980s to the 2000s.
The Musicology Band plays The Blue Room on Friday, October 16, starting at 5:30 PM. They're the first of three acts billed for a run at the venue that stretches through October 19, and they'll be sharing the stage with pianist Chris Lewis leading Sound on Sound KC. For Sound on Sound KC, it's the first Blue Room date since July.
If you haven't come across them before, the band was founded by Niome, born in Hawaii to a Navy veteran. Before putting this group together, Niome spent more than 30 years singing at arenas, festivals, theaters and on a cruise ship. The band is built around a repertoire of funk, R&B, Motown, pop, rock and blues from the 1980s to the 2000s—a broad stretch of ground that covers a lot of familiar territory. Kansas City Parks billed a previous show by the band as a "masterclass" in those styles.
There's a bit of a wild card in the mix, too: singer Kelley Gant also whistles. Gant placed third in two categories at an international whistling competition in Los Angeles, so it's something you'll likely hear during the set. Between that and the wide-ranging setlist, the night should pull from a few different places.
