A workshop where participants learn to mindfully document their personal history for descendants and future generations using physical and digital methods.
History in Your Making is a workshop on documenting your own life, held at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Saturday, October 17, from 1 PM to 3 PM. It's hosted in the Cohen Conference Center, and the whole session is open to seniors, adults, and teens.
The core of the workshop is about how to mindfully document your individual history for descendants, future generations, and historians. It's less about writing a formal memoir and more about the everyday stuff—the small details and personal stories that usually get lost over time. You'll spend the two hours thinking about what parts of your life are worth saving and how to actually go about it.
A good part of the session is dedicated to the practical side of preservation. You'll look at both physical and digital recording methods, so you can decide which one fits your story best. That includes things like personal keepsakes, computer data, and even time capsules—the kind of tangible things you can hand down to someone later. It's as much about the how as it is about the what.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in Kansas City and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.

Since it's open to seniors, adults, and teens, it's the kind of thing that works if you bring a family member along. You can sit side-by-side and think through your histories together. Just keep in mind that an RSVP is required to attend, so you'll want to sign up ahead of time. The workshop runs from 1 PM to 3 PM on Saturday, October 17, at the Plaza Branch's Cohen Conference Center.
