The brass band Grand Marquis, a Kansas City roots music group, plays a dinner matinee show at The Ship.
Grand Marquis play The Ship on Friday, October 23, for a dinner matinee that starts early in the evening. Doors open at 6 PM, and the music runs from 7 to 9 PM.
If you haven't run into them before, Grand Marquis is a Kansas City brass powerhouse that's been around for more than 23 years, with over 2,200 shows across the US and eight full-length recordings behind them. Their sound pulls from American roots styles—Kansas City blues and Memphis soul—and mixes them with the exuberance of a New Orleans second line, held together by a chorus of horns, a groove-heavy rhythm section, and big, soulful vocals.
They've put in the work across the country and in the studio. They recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, put out a tribute to KC soul singer Tony Ashley called Can't Put You Down, and were a Blues Foundation International Blues Challenge Finalist. Since then, they've picked up several 'Best Of' awards in blues and jazz from Kansas City publications.
