A volunteer workday with the Native Garden Team at Lakeside Nature Center, focusing on native gardening and invasive species removal.
Lakeside Nature Center is hosting a Garden Work Day this Saturday, October 10, from 9 AM to 11 AM. It's a volunteer morning with the Native Garden Team, so if you've been wanting to get your hands in the dirt and spend a few hours outdoors, this is a good way to do it. The center is at 4701 East Gregory Boulevard in Kansas City.
To get a sense of what you're signing up for, it helps to know who's behind it. The Friends of Lakeside Nature Center (FOLNC) have been supporting the center since it opened in 1983, providing both volunteers and funding. The Native Garden Team is just one part of what they do. Once volunteers complete a training course, they can help out with educational outreach to schools and groups, staffing events, native gardening, and removing invasive species along the Fox Hollow trail system. They also care for the center's animal ambassadors and the animals in the rehabilitation hospital. There are separate Fox Hollow Trail volunteer events that focus specifically on invasive species removal and trail maintenance.

This particular workday is free, and you'll be working alongside the Native Garden Team. It's a short window—two hours on a Saturday morning—so it's an easy one to fit in. Just keep in mind that workdays can be cancelled in severe weather, and you need to RSVP at least two days in advance. If you're planning to go, make sure you get that RSVP in early.
