A family workshop where participants create art inspired by Bach's Goldberg Variations through rubbing rose leaves and collage, following the example of artist Farhad Ostovani.
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is hosting Bach to Nature on Saturday, October 17, from 11 AM to 3 PM. It's a family workshop that lets you make art inspired by music, and it's part of the museum's weekly Free Weekend Fun series. The whole thing is free, and there's no registration required—you just drop in whenever you can during those hours.
Inside the workshop, you'll listen to Bach's Goldberg Variations while you work. The activity itself is hands-on: you'll rub rose leaves to create patterns and use collage to build your own piece. The whole process takes its cue from Farhad Ostovani, a painter who creates work inspired by music, and the workshop asks you to follow his example. It's the kind of session that works just as well for kids as it does for adults, so it's an easy one to bring the family along for.
If you want to see where the inspiration comes from, the museum is showing Ostovani's Goldberg Variations in Gallery 203. While you're there, you can also go on a bit of a hunt: there are flowers depicted across the galleries, and Museum Guide Volunteers are on hand to help you find them. Between the workshop and the gallery, there's plenty to do even if you're not planning on spending the whole afternoon.
