Fables & Fairy Tales: An All-Ages Improvised Musical

Fables & Fairy Tales: An All-Ages Improvised Musical plays at The Bird Comedy Theater on Saturday, October 17. It's an improvised musical built around fables and fairy tales, and as the name says, it's all-ages, so it works for families as much as for a night out with friends.

If you've never seen an improvised musical, the premise is pretty straightforward: the performers make up the songs and the story on the spot, usually starting with a suggestion from the audience. In this case, the starting point is the world of fables and fairy tales, so expect the familiar territory of talking animals, magic, and moral lessons, all rewritten in real time. Since it's improvised, no two shows are the same—what happens on stage depends entirely on the room that night.

The show is at The Bird Comedy Theater, located at 103 W. 19th Street in the Crossroads Arts District. The Bird is Kansas City's dedicated comedy club, and it's been running since 2022, when it was voted the city's #1 comedy club. They put on improv, sketch, and stand-up every week in the Crossroads, and they also run improv classes for people who want to get on stage themselves, along with private comedy performances for corporate events and parties. This musical is part of that regular rotation.
