A nine-piece R&B and soul tribute to The Blues Brothers, featuring some of Kansas City's finest rhythm and soul players, with a full horn section.
Elwood & The Blues Masters bring their tribute to The Blues Brothers to The Ship on Friday, October 16, from 6 PM to 9 PM. It's a nine-piece R&B and soul outfit led by Russ 'Elwood' Dameron, who fronts the band on vocals and harmonica. The group describes the show as a 'mission from god,' and they pull from some of Kansas City's finest rhythm and soul players, including former members of the legendary Atlantic Express.
On stage, the full horn section is a big part of the sound. Bryan Wood is on saxophone, Fred Zimmerman on trombone, Cole Gurley on bari sax, and Byron Jones on trumpet. The rhythm section is rounded out by Dennis Marx on drums and vocals, Cliff Payne on bass and vocals, Scott Christensen on guitar and vocals, and Pat Pearce on keys and vocals. With that many voices and horns, it's a full-band sound rather than a small combo.
The set covers The Blues Brothers' hits alongside the Stax Records artists of the 1960s and '70s—names like Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Eddie Floyd. It's the kind of soul and R&B that defined the Stax era, so the night reaches beyond the movie and into the records that inspired it. The band has also sat down with The Pitch KC to talk about the story behind the group.
