An open, respectful and uncensored discussion about death, run as a casual gathering with snacks and tea provided.
A Death Café is coming to the Kansas City Public Library, Plaza Branch, on Wednesday, November 11, from 7 to 8 PM. If you've never heard of one, the name is pretty literal: it's a gathering where people sit down and talk about death. The library is hosting it in the Turner Meeting Room.
It's not a support group, and it's not a clinical session. There's no agenda to work through, no grief counseling, and no one there to lead you toward a specific conclusion. Instead, it's run as a casual gathering—the kind of thing where you just show up and join the conversation. The organizers describe it as an open, respectful, and uncensored discussion about death, and they make it clear that all are welcome, regardless of where you're coming from or what your relationship to the subject is.
The whole idea is to encourage people to talk about dying while they're still living, and to do it in a relaxed setting. It's a chance to bring up the things that usually get pushed to the side in everyday conversation—the questions, the fears, the practicalities, or just the general strangeness of it all—without the pressure of a formal setting. To keep things low-key, they'll have snacks and tea provided, so you can just lean back and listen or jump in when you feel like it.

One thing to keep in mind: booking is required to attend, so you'll want to reserve your spot ahead of time rather than just showing up. The session runs from 7 to 8 PM on Wednesday, November 11, at the Plaza Branch's Turner Meeting Room.
