A workshop on crafting personal essays, memoirs, and literary journalism taught by a UMKC MFA student as part of the Writers for Readers series.
Creative Nonfiction: Write a Richer Personal Story is coming to the Lucile H. Bluford Branch Conference Center on Monday, October 12, from 6 to 8 PM. It's a workshop on crafting personal essays, memoirs, and literary journalism, and it's part of Writers for Readers, one of the Kansas City Public Library's activity series that brings writers into library branches to teach and share.
The class is aimed at new writers who often pass over nonfiction in favor of more flowery or fanciful kinds of writing. The idea is to show how you can use creative techniques with memories, dreams, or anecdotes to craft personal essays, memoirs, and literary journalism that are memorable and powerful, and still true. If you've always thought of nonfiction as just reporting facts, this is a good place to see how it can be as literary as any fiction you've read.
Leading the session is a graduate student in the University of Missouri-Kansas City's MFA Program in Creative Writing. Having someone from the MFA program run it means you're getting a perspective from someone who's currently working through the craft at a graduate level, rather than just a casual enthusiast. It's a two-hour window, so there's plenty of time to get into the actual mechanics of the work.
