A street party and neighbourhood festival celebrating Día de los Muertos with Latinx music, food, vendor booths and lowriders on Southwest Boulevard.
Café Corazón is taking over the street for CaféCITÓN: Día de los Muertos Block Party on Saturday, October 17, from 11 AM to 2 PM. The coffee house is turning the stretch of Southwest Boulevard right in front of its doors into a neighborhood festival, and it's open to the community with free admission. It's a Día de los Muertos celebration, so the day is built around the holiday.
On the music side, there's an outdoor DJ set by DJ Monse and La Del Tumbao, with DJ Astro holding things down inside the café. The block party adds signature cocktails, Latin-inspired food, local vendor booths, and Latin lowriders to the mix. If you're just coming for the coffee, the café specializes in classic and specialty Latinx coffee and espresso drinks, and it's the premier spot in the Midwest for traditional yerba mate.
The food menu pulls from the owners' families: Mexican tamales and burritos alongside Argentinian empanadas and alfajores. Miel Castagna-Herrera's father, Alberto José Castagna, grew up in Buenos Aires and emigrated to the U.S. at 16; Curtis Herrera's grandparents, Felipa and Aniseto, came from Guadalajara in the 1930s to work on the railroads and farms of Western Kansas. That mix of Mexican and Argentinian roots is exactly what you'll find on the menu.
