A daring fusion linking Stravinsky's ballet 'Petrouchka' with Kendrick Lamar's album 'DAMN', part of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's Uncharted Series.
The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is pairing Igor Stravinsky with Kendrick Lamar at the Hilbert Circle Theatre on Wednesday, February 10, 2027. It's part of their Uncharted Series, a Steve Hackman SYMPHONYFUSE production that puts Stravinsky's ballet Petrouchka alongside Lamar's album DAMN.
The two works run in their original order, so each scene of the ballet pairs with the next song from the album: LOVE, FEAR, XXX, FEEL, LOYALTY, HUMBLE, and so on. The production links them through a 'show-within-a-show' device — a puppet show in Petrouchka and an alternate world in DAMN — and through two characters, Petrouchka and Kung-Fu Kenny, who both struggle with identity and reality.
Kendrick Lamar is a West Coast rapper known for conscious, introspective lyrics and social commentary on African-American culture. Journalists have named him among the greatest rappers of all time, and in 2018 he became the first musician outside the classical and jazz genres to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Music. DAMN was the album that won it.
