Concert by The Buena Vista Orchestra, the Cuban music repertory ensemble led by violinist Rolando Morejón Reyes, at The Egyptian.
The Buena Vista Orchestra plays The Egyptian on Wednesday, October 21, at 7 PM. They're a Cuban music repertory ensemble, and they describe themselves as the world's foremost one. The group is led by Cuban violinist Rolando Morejón Reyes, and they pull their musicians from a revolving lineup of the original Buena Vista Social Club, AfroCuban All Stars, and the bands of Celia Cruz, Omara Portuondo, Chucho Valdés, Willie Colón and Cachao. They've toured the world and are counted among the biggest-selling and best-known Cuban music projects in history.
For this date, the lineup includes Morejón Reyes on violin, trumpeter Antonio Perigo, percussionist Miguel Valdés, pianist Helder Rojas, trombonist Yosmel Garceran, Latin Grammy nominee Pepe Espinosa, and lead singers Barbara Zamora Vargas and Julio Rodriguez Delet. That's a full horn section and two singers on top of the rhythm section, so it's a big sound for one stage.

They're also coming off a new studio album, recorded between Philadelphia and Miami, with Omara Portuondo on the focus track "Chan Chan." The record blends traditional Cuban rhythms with contemporary influences, so the set should pull from both the old repertory and the newer material. The show is at The Egyptian, 6265 Carrollton Ave, on Wednesday, October 21, starting at 7 PM.
