A symphonic journey through Europe with Rick Steves narrating the evening while the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performs 19th-century Romantic-era anthems accompanied by video images.
Rick Steves is coming to the Hilbert Circle Theatre on Friday, November 13, for Rick Steves' Europe: A Symphonic Journey. He's teaming up with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the whole thing is built around him acting as a musical tour guide. Steves narrates the evening, drawing on his knowledge of European history and culture to set the scene for each piece before the orchestra takes over.
Once he's set the stage, the orchestra plays a selection of 19th-century Romantic-era anthems by composers like Grieg, Smetana, Strauss, Berlioz, and Verdi. Each piece is accompanied by a montage of evocative video images from the countries the music represents, so you're seeing the places as you hear the music. It's a full-length show with one 20-minute intermission.
On the podium is Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly, leading the orchestra through the program. Steves himself is described as America's leading authority on European travel, and that's the role he plays here: he provides the context and the storytelling that connects the music to the map.
