Butler University's 40th anniversary holiday concert, with its chorale and symphony orchestra, marking the 40th anniversary of the annual Rejoice! tradition.
Rejoice! returns to Clowes Memorial Hall on Friday, December 11 and Saturday, December 12, both nights at 7:30 PM. It's Butler University's annual holiday concert, and 2026 marks its 40th anniversary, so it's a bit more of a milestone than usual.
The scale of the thing is what stands out. It's a collaboration that brings together the university's choral ensembles—the Butler University Chorale, Spectra, and the Chamber Singers—and pairs them with the Butler Symphony Orchestra. More than 160 students take part, and the program mixes classic holiday tunes with newer traditions, along with readings by Butler faculty. The Saturday night performance adds another layer: former choral directors Henry Leck and Michael Shasberger return to conduct alumni singers.
Behind the scenes, the production is a tag-team effort. It's usually led by Maestro Richard Auldon Clark and driven by faculty members Dr. Eric Stark and Dr. John Perkins, who share the work of putting it all together. The collaboration itself is the point—the choral groups and the orchestra (or wind ensemble) coming together on one stage.
