Free public jazz concert by the Butler University Jazz Combos with special guest pianist and composer Steve Allee.
The Butler University Jazz Combos play The Krannert Room on Thursday, October 29, with special guest Steve Allee joining them on piano. It's part of the Music at Butler series, and Allee is a local name with a long reach.
Allee is an Indianapolis pianist, composer, and arranger, and he's coming from a city that produced jazz legends like Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton, and J.J. Johnson. He toured with the Buddy Rich Orchestra at 19, and his big-band album Downtown Blues earned a Grammy nomination. His first national solo disc, The Magic Hour on Noteworthy Records, reached number 14 on the Gavin national radio poll.
Beyond the stage, he's written for film and television. He did the soundtrack for the movie inspired by Dan Wakefield's book New York in the Fifties, which he presented at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and the score for Something To Cheer About, the film about the 1954-55 Crispus Attucks basketball team. His writing credits also include network shows like Chicago Hope, Mad About You, Friends, Nash Bridges, NYPD Blue, and Touched by an Angel.
