The Butler University Wind Ensemble plays 'From Sea to Shining Sea' with the United States Navy Band Brass Quintet led by Commander Robert 'Seph' Coats.
The Butler University Wind Ensemble plays From Sea to Shining Sea at the Schrott Center for the Arts on Thursday, November 19, at 7:30 PM. The whole evening is built around a collaboration with the United States Navy Band Brass Quintet, led by Commander Robert "Seph" Coats, who heads Navy Music worldwide.
The program moves through a few different moods. Graduate conducting student Collin Cerny opens with Johan De Meij, and then the Navy Brass Quintet takes over for New York Cityscapes by Jeff Tyzik. From there, the ensemble turns to two American band classics: Morton Gould's Ballad for Band and Aaron Copland's The Promise of Living. The night closes with an homage to American military bands, led by Captain Coats.
There's a bit more to the collaboration than just the one concert. The project was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts America at 250 Award, and the ensemble took the program into local schools the day before, playing public-school concerts in Pike Township and Warren Township on November 18. If you can't make it in person, there's a free live stream of the performance available.
