A gothic retelling of Shakespeare's Hamlet, presented by the Garfield Shakespeare Company as the final show of their 20th anniversary season.
Garfield Shakespeare Company is bringing Hamlet: A Gothic Fantasia to the Garfield Park MacAllister Amphitheater at 2425 Conservatory Drive, and it's running through October 17. The show starts at 7:30 PM each night, so you've got a few chances to catch it before it closes.
As the title suggests, this is a gothic retelling of Shakespeare's Hamlet. It's an adaptation created and directed by Chris Burton, who also takes the helm on the production. It's the final show of the company's 20th anniversary season, which puts it as the capstone to a whole year of work. If you're familiar with the play, you know the beats—the ghost, the revenge, the royal family falling apart—but the gothic framing shifts the mood into something darker and more atmospheric than a standard staging.
Garfield Shakespeare Company is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and their mission is to keep theater free and accessible for the Indianapolis community. That's why the show is free to attend, though donations are appreciated. They also make sure the seating is wheelchair accessible, so it's an easy night to bring along a group without worrying about tickets or accessibility.
