Concert featuring pianist-composer Conrad Tao performing Beethoven's First Piano Concerto and his own work 'The Hand', with Richard Egarr conducting Mozart's Symphony No. 39.
Conrad Tao takes the stage at the Hilbert Circle Theatre on Saturday, October 24, at 7:30 PM. The evening pairs him with Beethoven and Mozart, and it's built around a specific connection: Tao is playing Beethoven's First Piano Concerto alongside his own new work, The Hand, which he wrote as a modern companion piece to that same concerto. Hearing them in the same program lets you hear the two side by side—the early Beethoven and Tao's response to it.
Tao is a pianist and a composer, and this is one of those nights where he does both. The Hand is his own piece, so you'll get to hear him perform his own writing right next to the Beethoven concerto that inspired it. It's a good way to see how a contemporary composer works with a piece from the past rather than just playing a standard set of classics.
The second half of the program shifts to Mozart. Historical performance specialist Richard Egarr leads the orchestra through Mozart's Symphony No. 39, one of his grand symphonies. Between Tao on the piano and Egarr leading the orchestra, the night covers two different approaches to the repertoire—one centered on a solo pianist and his own new work, the other on a full symphony led by a specialist in historical performance.
