A symphonic concert by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra featuring works by Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky, part of the 2026-27 Classical Series.
Classically Modern: Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky comes to the Hilbert Circle Theatre on April 2, 2027, as part of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's 2026-27 season. The title gives it away: the program brings together three of the biggest names in the orchestral repertoire—Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky—all in one evening. It's a pairing that puts the late Romanticism of Tchaikovsky alongside the 20th-century weight of Shostakovich and the rhythmic shift of Stravinsky, so you'll hear a fair bit of ground covered in a single sitting.
The concert is part of the ISO's Classical Series, which Music Director Jun Märkl has built around Beethoven. Throughout the season, all seven of Beethoven's concertos are paired with landmark works by Mahler, Brahms, Schumann, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky. This particular night falls into that pattern, bringing together the Russian tradition of Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky with the modernism of Stravinsky. Beyond the Beethoven thread, the season also looks at the revolutionary legacy of the Ballets Russes and includes new work from living composers, so this is one of the nights where the orchestra leans into the 20th-century side of the program.

If you're planning to go, it's worth knowing that the concert is part of a larger series rather than a standalone date. Subscriptions are sold through the ISO website, and individual tickets have been available since July 21, 2026, so there's plenty of time to grab a seat before April. The show takes place at the Hilbert Circle Theatre in downtown Indianapolis, and the program features Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky.
