The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra presents the 'Berlin to Vienna' series with Jun Märkl conducting Mozart and Mahler, featuring a special appearance by Stefan Dohr on the horn.
The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra brings Berlin to Vienna: Mozart and Mahler's Fifth to the Hilbert Circle Theatre on Saturday, February 27, 2027. It's part of the orchestra's Berlin to Vienna series, which is built around bringing European repertoire to the ISO's home here in the city.
The program opens with Mozart's Overture to Così fan tutte, a bright, energetic piece that sets the stage for the rest of the evening. From there, the focus shifts to the horn: Stefan Dohr, a horn virtuoso from the Berlin Philharmonic, joins the orchestra for Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 3. It's a charming, melodic concerto that lets the horn take center stage, and having a Berlin Philharmonic principal on the soloist's chair gives it a direct connection to the European tradition the whole series is named for.
The second half belongs to Mahler's Symphony No. 5, a massive work that takes up most of the night. It's a long, demanding piece that moves through a wide range of moods, and the ISO describes it as a cathartic journey from darkness to triumph. Music Director Jun Märkl leads the orchestra through it, and it's the kind of symphony that works best when you can hear the full force of the ensemble in the room.

Between the Mozart and the Mahler, the program covers a lot of ground—from the light, classical elegance of the first half to the heavy, late-Romantic scale of the second. It's a full evening of music, starting with the Così fan tutte overture, moving through the Horn Concerto No. 3 with Stefan Dohr, and closing with the Symphony No. 5. The concert is at 5:30 PM at the Hilbert Circle Theatre, 45 Monument Circle, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204.
