Eight regular Indy Story Slam participants tell ten-minute versions of their winning stories in a celebration of the monthly storytelling slam.
The 2nd Annual Celebration of the Indy Story Slam is coming to the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute on Sunday, January 10, from 4 PM to 5:30 PM. It's a special afternoon presented by Storytelling Arts of Indiana, the organization that runs the monthly slams.
If you've never been to an Indy Story Slam, here's how it usually works: every third Wednesday of the month, storytellers and audiences gather at a local bar or restaurant for a friendly competition. Participants tell five-minute stories around a specific theme, and the top three walk away with cash prizes. It's one of the city's more beloved regulars, and this celebration is a variation on that format. Instead of a competition, eight regular Slam participants each take a winning story from a previous slam and stretch it into a ten-minute version. You get the stories that already stood up to the competition, just with more room to breathe.
Storytelling Arts of Indiana has been around since 1988, and they describe their mission as enriching, connecting, and entertaining through storytelling. Their Signature Series runs from September through April at the Frank & Katrina Basile Theater, which is part of the Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center. This celebration sits alongside those monthly slams and their other shows throughout the year.
