A family-friendly concert pairing young musicians with members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, featuring the winner of the Michael Ben and Illene Komisarow Maurer Young Musicians Competition.
Side by Side is back at the Hilbert Circle Theatre on Wednesday, March 17, at 6:30 PM. It's one of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's family-friendly concerts, and the whole thing is built around a pretty specific idea: pairing young musicians with members of the orchestra, who then perform together on the same stage.
That's not just a one-off appearance, either. The young musicians spend four weeks of intensive coaching with the orchestra members before the concert, so by the time they hit the stage, they've been working through the music together for a month. It's a good way to see how the professional side of the orchestra works from the inside, and it's a family-friendly night, so it's as much for kids as it is for adults.
There's another part to the evening, too: the program features the winner of the Michael Ben and Ilene Komisarow Maurer Young Musicians Competition, who takes their own spot in the spotlight alongside the Side by Side ensemble. Between the combined orchestra and the competition winner, the night is focused on young musicians performing at a professional level.

It's a Wednesday night, so it's a mid-week outing rather than a weekend one. The concert starts at 6:30 PM at the Hilbert Circle Theatre in downtown Indianapolis.
