The Smashing Pumpkins arrive at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Tuesday, October 20, with the show set to start at 8:00 PM. It's one of the stops on the Rats in a Cage tour, which runs from late September into November and marks 30 years since Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness came out in 1995. The tour opened in Columbus, Ohio, on September 30 and wraps up on November 12 in Inglewood, California, so Indianapolis falls in the middle of the run.

The night is split into two sets. The first one is made up entirely of songs from Mellon Collie, staged in a highly theatrical way. Billy Corgan has said the band had been talking about a show built around that album for more than a decade. The second set covers the rest of the catalog, from the 1991 debut Gish up to Aghori Mhori Mei, released in 2024. Based on the Columbus opener, the first set included "1979" and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," along with "Cupid de Locke" and "Galapogos," which hadn't been played since 2008. The set closed with the title track. The second half featured the live debuts of "Machina, Machina" and "Sojourner," plus "Jesus Is the Sun" from Gish, which had never been performed live before. Other songs like "As Rome Burns" and "Superchrist" were also back on the list after years away. Setlists can change from night to night, so the Indianapolis show may look different. According to Ticketmaster's tour page, the concert typically runs between 1 hour 40 minutes and 2 hours.
The band's sound draws from a wide mix of styles, including gothic rock, heavy metal, grunge, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegaze, dream pop and electronica. The current lineup features Corgan on vocals, guitar, keyboards and bass, James Iha on guitar, bass and backing vocals, and Jimmy Chamberlin on drums. Jack Bates plays bass and Kiki Wong plays guitar as touring members. The Smashing Pumpkins have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and have won two Grammy Awards.
