Houston Ballet production of Where's Alice?, a modern adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland set in a dystopian, screen-saturated world.
Houston Ballet brings Where's Alice? to the Brown Theater at the Wortham Theater Center from February 25 to March 7, 2027. It's a brand-new adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, but it's not the story you remember from childhood. This version updates the tale for the dystopia of the modern age.
In this version, Alice doesn't fall down a rabbit hole in a garden. Instead, she falls from a Black Mirror-esque world of screens, 'likes' and doomscrolling, and lands in a fantastical place inspired by Carroll's original wonderland, peopled by a cast of bizarre characters and strange creatures. It's the same basic journey—a girl lost in a world that doesn't make sense—but the starting point is something we'll all recognize from our own phones.
The choreography is by Stanton Welch AM, and the score comes from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the duo known for their work with Nine Inch Nails and their film scores. That pairing tells you a lot about the mood: Welch's movement set against the atmospheric, often industrial sound Reznor and Ross are known for. The production is built to be completely immersive, with Welch using modern visual and audio technology to pull the audience through the rabbit hole and right inside Alice's world, rather than keeping the action confined to the stage.
