A half marathon and 10K race presented by the Houston Striders, supporting UTHealth Houston and charitable initiatives, with wheelchair and handcycle divisions.
The UTHealth Houston Half Marathon & 10K returns to downtown Houston on Sunday, October 25, with the start and finish both at 1000 Bagby St, right near Sam Houston Park. It's a race that brings together a wide mix of people: local runners, walkers, charity fundraisers, and Team UTHealth Houston, which includes students, faculty, staff, and their families. There are handcycle and wheelchair divisions alongside the running distances, so it's open to more than just those on foot.
The course is described as fast and mostly flat, which is a nice thing to know before you sign up. At the start and finish, there's a runners' village with a bag drop and bike valet, so you can leave your gear and ride in without worrying about your car. If you're running for a cause, the Kind Stride Program lets you raise money for a charity of your choice. Finisher medals go to everyone who crosses the line, and age-group awards go to the top three in each category.
The whole thing is put on by the Houston Striders, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit running club that's been staging races in Houston since 1985. Over the years, they've directed more than $1 million to Houston-area organizations and charities, so the race supports more than just the runners on the course. The day wraps up with a post-race reception of breakfast tacos, Karbach beer, and IHOP pancakes.
