An immersive chamber of voices, light and memories staged inside the cavernous Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern, where visitors' voices shape a glowing network of light.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has a new installation, Undercurrents, on view at the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern in Houston. It's an immersive chamber of voices, light, and memories staged inside the cavernous underground space, and it's running from April 24, 2026, through January 24, 2027.
Lozano-Hemmer is a world-recognized multimedia artist who works with light, sound, and human presence, and Undercurrents fits right into that. The installation turns the Cistern into a living system: visitors speak, listen, and reflect as their voices travel through a glowing network of light, shaping an environment that changes with everyone who enters. The soundscape is built from original pieces by Houston poets, and their language moves in sync with pulses of light across a mile-long network of LED lines. It's an audiovisual representation of communication across time, space, and relationships.
If you've been to the Cistern before, you know it's not a typical gallery. It's a massive, subterranean space that has hosted installations by artists like Kelly O'Brien, Rachel Rossin, Magdalena Fernández, Carlos Cruz-Diez, and Anri Sala. Undercurrents uses that scale to its advantage, with the mile of LED lines stretching through the cavern.
