An immersive digital art exhibition that brings to life the ocean's twilight zone, blending science from WHOI with ARTECHOUSE's digital art and extended reality.
ARTECHOUSE Houston has a new show on, Twilight Zone: Hidden Wonders of the Ocean, which opened September 18 and runs through the fall. It's a collaboration between ARTECHOUSE Studio and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), a private non-profit founded in 1930 and one of the world's leading ocean research organizations. The whole thing centers on the ocean's twilight zone—the stretch between 200 and 1,000 meters below the surface. It's one of the planet's largest and least understood habitats, where creatures make their own light and the largest daily animal migration on Earth takes place as organisms rise at night and descend before dawn.
WHOI's Ocean Twilight Zone Project spent six years developing new technologies and collecting first-of-their-kind datasets to power the show. ARTECHOUSE, founded in 2015, blends that science with digital art, an original score by Mehmet Ünal, and extended-reality activations—one of which lets you ride along with WHOI's underwater robot, Mesobot. In the lobby, you'll find Time and Tide by Houston marine conservation artist Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee.
