A Baroque concert featuring Théotime Langlois de Swarte on violin and Justin Taylor on harpsichord, performing 18th-century French court music.
Théotime Langlois de Swarte and Justin Taylor bring their violin and harpsichord duo to the Cullen Theater at the Wortham Center on Tuesday, March 23, 2027. It's part of the Admiral Transfer Music Series, and the whole evening is built around the 18th-century French court.
At the center of the program are François Francoeur and François Rebel, two friends of the court who spent decades writing operas together and published their work as a single voice. The music runs in continuous sequences, the way a court evening would have unfolded, and closes with Corelli's La Folia—the piece every Baroque violinist eventually has to face. It's a program that stays within that French court world, with the two composers taking up most of the night.
Langlois de Swarte and Taylor are two of France's young early-music stars, and they've been playing together for a while. Gramophone called them "musically brothers," and The Strad noted they play with "panache aplenty." Hearing them live gives you a sense of how they work as a pair, rather than just reading about it.
