Open house event for the retrospective exhibition of the Community Artists' Collective, featuring archival imagery, mixed media, and immersive installations.
The Community Artists' Collective is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a retrospective exhibition, The Road to 40, on view at their space at 4111 Fannin Street in Houston. The show opened on August 28 and runs through October 30, so you've got a good window to catch it.
Viktor Le Givens curated the retrospective, which brings together work from well over 35 artists who've been part of the Collective's history. It's a broad look at four decades of the organization's life, told through archival imagery, mixed media, fiber arts, and immersive installation. The Collective has spent those forty years as a sanctuary, incubator, and cultural cornerstone for the Houston arts community, and this show marks that milestone by honoring an intergenerational network of founders, local practitioners, and everyday culture-keepers.
There are two specific dates to keep in mind if you want to do more than just walk through. On Saturday, October 17, they're hosting an open house from 1 PM to 6 PM. They're framing it as a real-estate-style housewarming—an invitation inside the Collective's shared home to catch up on its progress and celebrate the contributions that have shaped the community. It's a different take on the usual artist talk, and it gives you a chance to see the space and the work together.

Then there's the closing reception on Friday, October 30, from 6 PM to 9 PM, which brings together the collaborative artists who contributed to the exhibition. An artist talk follows at 7:30 PM. Between the open house on the 17th and the closing reception on the 30th, there are plenty of ways to see The Road to 40 before it closes.
