The Joffrey Ballet presents Alexander Ekman's Midsummer Night's Dream, a full-length work with massive sets, nearly fifty dancers, and live vocals by Swedish singer Anna von Hausswolff.
The Joffrey Ballet is coming to Jones Hall on October 23 and 24 with Alexander Ekman's Midsummer Night's Dream. It's a full-length work that runs two and a half hours, including a 25-minute intermission, so you'll want to clear your evening.
Ekman keeps Shakespeare's title but lets everything else run wild. The production is built around massive sets, nearly fifty dancers, and a stage full of hay. The music is by Mikael Karlsson, and Swedish singer Anna von Hausswolff performs live on stage throughout. Karlsson wrote the score with her voice as a character in its own right, and he also scored Ekman's A Swan Lake.
Ekman created the piece for the Royal Swedish Ballet in 2015. The Joffrey brought it to America in 2018 and remains the only U.S. company to dance it. The company itself, the "Company of Firsts" founded by Robert Joffrey in 1956, is returning to Houston to mark Performing Arts Houston's 60th anniversary and to open their Diamond Anniversary Season. This is the twelfth engagement between the company and Performing Arts Houston, a relationship that dates back to The Joffrey's Houston debut in 1968.
