The Houston Symphony presents Prokofiev's Symphony No. 7 and Shéhérazade, led by Music Director Juraj Valčuha with mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke.
The Houston Symphony is taking over Jones Hall for Thanksgiving weekend, with three performances on Friday, November 27, Saturday, November 28, and Sunday, November 29. The Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 PM, and the Sunday matinee is at 2:00 PM. Music Director Juraj Valčuha is leading the orchestra, and mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke joins them for the Ravel.
The program pairs Prokofiev's Symphony No. 7 with Ravel's Shéhérazade. Prokofiev wrote the symphony for a children's radio program, and it's known for its twinkling charm and fairy-tale magic. Ravel's Shéhérazade is a bewitching piece that Sasha Cooke sings along with the orchestra. Valčuha describes the whole thing as a sumptuous musical feast, and the night wraps up with film-score music from Bernard Herrmann's Vertigo.

It's a good one to bring the family to—the symphony is recommended for ages 6 and over. The performance runs about 90 minutes with a 20-minute intermission, so you're in and out in under two hours. Doors open 60 minutes before the concert, and a 45-minute prelude fills the room while people find their seats. Tickets start at $29.
