Grammy-nominated composer Tim Hagans leads an ensemble celebrating the magical and mystical life of birds in a new composition.
Tim Hagans brings his new composition, Symphony for City Dwellers & the Birds of Dawn & Dusk, to MATCH Houston on Thursday, October 8. Hagans is a Grammy-nominated composer and trumpeter, and for this piece he's put together an ensemble of some of Houston's most creative musicians to celebrate the magical and mystical life of birds.
The music looks at a few different angles. It asks why birds sing, touches on the perils they face with climate change and loss of habitat, and, above all, the influence of their joyous song on city dwellers. The premiere was made possible in part by a grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance and by a Midtownhou Micro Arts Grant.
On stage, Hagans handles trumpet and composing, joined by Anthony Almendárez on trumpet and electronics, Warren Sneed on saxophones, clarinet, and flute, and David Dove on trombone. Jesse Ward is on guitar, Gabriel Martinez on percussion, and Michele Brangwen provides spoken word. Kris Phelps is handling lighting design. It's a large group for a single composition, with a brass section and electronics running alongside the woodwinds, guitar, and percussion, and spoken word woven in.
