A day of devotional observances, fasting until noon, kirtan, and a prasadam feast to honour the disappearance of Srila Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON.
ISKCON of Houston marks the disappearance day of Srila Prabhupada on Thursday, November 12, 2026. It's an all-day observance, and the tradition is to fast until noon. For those who know the history, the day commemorates the passing of the Founder Acharya of ISKCON, who left his body in perfect Krishna consciousness. In the Vaishnava tradition, a great soul's disappearance day is honored as much as their appearance day—the idea being that Vaishnavas die to live, and while living, they work to spread the holy name.
The morning program kicks off at 7:30 AM. It includes a Srila Prabhupada class delivered by video, continuous kirtan, glorification of Srila Prabhupada, and pushpanjali—the offering of flowers. The morning wraps up with a prasadam feast, which is when the fasting ends.
The evening takes a different turn as part of Kirtan Fest. There's a special Bhajan Sandhya, a devotional singing evening, where the deities are brought out into the courtyard and chaat stations are served. Between the morning's focus on teaching and the evening's outdoor kirtan and street food, the day covers both the quiet and the celebratory sides of the tradition.
