A Pulitzer Prize-winning play exploring assimilation, hidden bias and the fragility of self-image in post-9/11 America, presented by Shunya Theatre.
Shunya Theatre is bringing Disgraced to MATCH in Midtown, with performances running October 2 through 11. It's a short run—six shows in ten days—so if you're planning to go, you'll want to pick your night early.
Disgraced is Ayad Akhtar's 2012 debut play, and it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2013. It centers on Amir Kapoor, a successful Pakistani-American corporate lawyer in New York who's spent years suppressing his Muslim heritage to fit into the American dream. That carefully built image starts to crack during a dinner party with his white artist wife and their colleagues, where a tense evening spirals into a volatile debate over race, religion, and politics. The New York Times called it "a vitally engaged play about the thorny questions of identity and religion in the contemporary world," and noted that Akhtar puts contemporary attitudes toward religion under a microscope.
Shunya Theatre is a Houston troupe that's been giving voice to the South Asian American experience since 2002. They're a volunteer-run company, and their programming puts the Indian canon alongside diaspora voices and the wider world seen through a South Asian lens—a deliberate bridge between communities. Disgraced fits right into that mission, taking a story about assimilation and hidden bias and bringing it to a Houston stage.
