The Houston Symphony presents Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony with violinist Yoonshin Song performing Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2, conducted by Juraj ValÄuha.
The Houston Symphony is taking over Jones Hall for a three-night run from November 6 to 8, with Music Director Juraj ValÄuha leading the orchestra. The program centers on Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9, but it's a full evening of Russian classics that stretches across the whole set.
Concertmaster Yoonshin Song steps into the spotlight for Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2, which the symphony describes as a staggering musical journey supercharged with brooding drama and fast-and-furious energy. That's the heavy lifting of the night, and it's followed by Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9. To round things out, the orchestra plays Khachaturian's Suite from the Ballet 'Gayane' and Borodin's Polovtsian Dances, a crowd-pleaser that's tuneful and full of music you'll likely recognize even if you've never seen it live. The whole thing runs about 120 minutes with a 20-minute intermission, and it's recommended for ages 6 and up.
