Austin-based supergroup Shinyribs, led by Kevin Russell, brings Texas blues, funk and soul to McGonigel's Mucky Duck.
Shinyribs are playing McGonigel's Mucky Duck on Tuesday, October 27, at 8:30 PM. They're an Austin-based nine-piece supergroup fronted by Kevin Russell, who's as much a part of the show as the music. He's known for the colorful suits and extravagant shoes, and he swaps an electric guitar for a ukulele. He's also fond of stage antics—donning a light-up cloak or leading a conga line through the crowd—and he's been credited with creating a cinematic live experience.
The band describes their sound as a sonic melting pot of Texas blues, New Orleans R&B, and horn-driven Memphis soul, with country twang, border music, big band swing, and roots-rock thrown in. It's a wide net, and they've got the numbers to cover it: nine musicians on stage, with the horns doing a good deal of the heavy lifting.
They've been around since 2010's Well After Awhile, and they've put out six records since then, including Fog & Bling in 2019. Their latest release, Late Night TV Gold, arrived in August 2021. Along the way, they've picked up some hardware from home: the Austin Chronicle's Austin Music Awards named them Best Austin Band in 2017 and 2018, and their album I Got Your Medicine took Album of the Year in 2017.
